TITLE: Coordinator of Student Services-Trauma Sensitive and Resilient Schools

LOCATION: Central Office and Training Center

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.

JOB GOAL: Develops, coordinates and implements trauma-informed practices in our KCKPS schools in order to create a community of resilience. Works with administrative, instructional and non-instructional staff, to put into place evidence-based trauma-informed systems to reduce re-traumatization, promote student resilience and increase positive academic and non-academic outcomes for students. Establishes a comprehensive trauma-informed approach to address both preventative and responsive measures for students.

  • Coordinate universal Trauma Informed professional development for KCKPS community including on-going training for building staff liaisons throughout the school year on our TSRS Framework
  • Align the work with the district initiatives and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, collaborating with district departments to ensure coherent alignment
  • With district departments, facilitate the alignment of school based health, mental health, culturally-specific programs, youth service and/or other community organizations under trauma informed principles and practices through training, networking opportunities and supervising and leading related district initiatives
  • Build the capacity of school sites to use relevant data to inform decision making to increase positive outcomes for students, families, and the community
  • Collaborate with Behavioral Health Teams, School Counselors and support staff in support of trauma sensitive culture and climate
  • Collect and interpret data for funding source(s) and communicate frequently with the Director of Student Support Programs and other stakeholders
  • Support the implementation of student and family-targeted universal education and messaging strategies focusing on resiliency and healing.
  • Provide individualized, classroom and school-based coaching to instructional and upport staff in building supportive relationships with students, creating trauma sensitive student support plans and implementing and sustaining trauma informed practices that promote positive culture and climate
  • Collaborate with district and school leadership staff to ensure that policies and procedures reflect an understanding of the role of trauma in student behaviors.
  • Facilitate ongoing technical assistance via virtual and written communication
  • Monitor local, state and national trends and best practices in the trauma informed school's arena through participation in training, forums and external networking groups.
  • Explore funding and in-kind partnerships to sustain partnership with community on trauma-informed practices and related services.
  • Thorough understanding and knowledge of the Code of Conduct, parent handbooks, and district strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with other program areas within the Department of Student Support Programs to support departmental strategic goals and initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director and Assistant Director of Student Support Programs


Meets the employment qualifications set forth by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education and the Kansas State Department of Education

Masters Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Worker, or related degree

Minimum of 4 years experience working in education or youth service field

Knowledge of trauma-informed theories, principles, practices and awareness of trauma, resilience, adverse child and community experiences, school climate, school social emotional frameworks (PBIS, MTSS) and social emotional learning concepts

Experience developing and facilitating professional development trainings and awareness of adult learning theories and ability to apply adult learning principles when coaching school-based professionals

Demonstrated success in working with students and families of diverse backgrounds

Ability to quickly establish and maintain cooperative and effective professional relationships, build trust in a limited time, and engage with a broad range of school-based staff and community partners around building a trauma sensitive culture

Bilingual (preferred)

Must be able to maintain positive interactions with parents and staff, and role model the values and expectations of our district

Effective oral and written communication skills

Demonstrated skills in human relations

Demonstrated skill and ability to effectively collaborate with District Leaders

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION: Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.

Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

Performs other related work as required.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

SALARY: Class of the Administrative Salary Schedule

REPORT TO: Director of Student Support Programs

EVALUATION: Performance of the Coordinator of Student Services will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy on administrator evaluation.
