POSITION DETAILS
John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) and an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice. Reporting to the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, and working in strategic partnership with other campus constituents, the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students (AVP/DOS) is a critical player in advancing the Division's strategic vision, mission, and goals. The successful candidate is a highly experienced and collaborative professional who possesses and ethos of care for students. The AVP/DOS possesses a strong leadership acumen, and extensive knowledge of higher education and student affairs principles, theories, and best practices that promote a student-centered campus community.
The (AVP/DOS) will enter the Division at a time where new standards in educational support, including intrusive and high-impact strategies designed to enhance the complete student life cycle experience are needed and in high demand. The (AVP/DOS) must possess the skillset, ability, and desire to immerse themselves in the daily lives of students.
A key component of the job is the further development of student engagement and connection to the campus. As we enter a new phase "post-COVID", we will need a strategic thinker who will reimagine what student life will look like, and support students through every step of their journey. The AVP/DOS will leverage their unique strengths to build on our record of success towardour vision of being a national leader in promoting student success in a diverse, urban college setting.
Core Responsibilities:
- Serve as the chief student advocate, educating the campus community on various trends related to student rights and responsibilities, contributing to the development and dissemination of policies on student behavior and civility, and working adeptly in an environment of student social justice activism.
- Supervise all student conduct and judicial issues, including dispute mediation and disciplinary hearings within CUNY administrative processes.
- Serve as the Chair of the Behavioral Intervention Team effectively managing student predicaments both proactively and in emergencies.
- Provide vision and oversight to various Student Affairs units, including but not limited to: The Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, Accessibility Services, International Student Services, The Children's Center, The Immigrant Student Success Center, The Woman's Center for Gender Justice, The Office of Student Transition Programs, The LGBTQ+ Resource Center, and The Urban Male Initiative.
- Supervision of Directors includes the development of annual and long-term operational and strategic goals, assessment, and attention to developing external funding sources. Adept at staff development through coaching, encouragement, and performance evaluation.
- Develop partnerships internal and external to the division to create vibrant, student-centered, learning-focused, and intentional co-curricular experiences.
- Coordinate the preparation of grant proposals to enhance student services and student success in partnership with institutional advancement.
- Provide strategic oversight and direction to key initiatives, including Commencement, Divisional committees and collaborative programmatic efforts with academic affairs.
- Maintain a visible and extensive in-person presence on campus, necessitating frequent evening and weekend work, including representing the division of EMSA at various student events.
- Represent the Vice President and the College at executive meetings on-campus and off campus CUNY-wide meetings in-person.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' of related experience preferably in a student affairs setting as a director of executive managerial role in student affairs-related work is required. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College.
- An advanced degree in higher education administration, counseling, student personnel, or closely related field; and at least eight years of progressively responsible senior level experience in student affairs.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication and leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students, faculty, staff and senior administration. Networking skills are essential.
- Recent training in leadership competencies in student affairs, especially dispute resolution, social justice and inclusion, law and policy, student conduct and judicial affairs.
- Experience with strategic planning and grants management is highly desirable.
- Demonstrate strong commitment to urban higher education in a multicultural, multiracial environment.
- Demonstrate ability in budget and resource allocation and strategic planning, and a clear understanding of the academic process and its relationship to student issues.
- Experience within a large multi-campus system is highly desirable.
- Demonstrate ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously and to formulate and execute effective action plans.
- Ability to work well in an intense, fast-pace environment.
- Able to recognize and/or recruit talented staff.
- Expertise in diffusing and resolving conflict while remaining empathetic to all parties involved. Must have strong mediation skills.
- Demonstrate cultural awareness.
- Ability to read, speak, and write in Spanish a plus.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$150,000 - $170,000
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
