SUMMARY:

Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO) for the University's F-1 and J-1 visa Exchange Visitor Program and must be able to meet federal requirements for these roles.

Reporting to the Associate Director of International Programs, the International Advisor will provide advisement and administrative follow-up for international students related to maintenance of their non-immigrant status and will serve as an advocate on behalf of international students with the University, the local community, and U.S. government agencies. This position requires substantial in-the -field experience, and the person holding this position must be current with knowledge about the full spectrum of federal and state regulations related to immigration matters as they pertain to higher education.

This position is responsible for supporting the University's maintenance of SEVIS as required for Department of Homeland Security compliance. The position will work closely with the Associate Director to support International Programs goals, policies, and procedures and will perform related work as required.

JOB DUTIES:

Under the supervision of the Associate Director, the International Advisor is responsible for providing advisement and program coordination that contributes to the positive adjustment and enrichment of international students.

The Advisor will advise on subjects, including but not limited to: Reinstatement, Optional Practical Training, Curricular Practical Training, Transfers, Travel/Departure, Reduced Course Load (RCL) authorizations, Program Extensions, STEM extensions, Academic Training, Enrollment verification, attendance, Change of Status, etc. Issue 1-20 and DS-2019 forms as required for F-1 and J-1 students and dependents. Work to maintain student SEVIS to assure compliance with governmental regulations and policies related to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).

Support to the Associate Director to ensure institutional compliance with federal regulations pertaining to the enrollment and employment of students and scholars on F-1 and J-1 visas. Represent International Programs in the absence of the Associate Director.

Promote international awareness and global engagement through programming and marketing including International Welcome Week and work with student groups to organize functions and volunteer projects. Provide support services and referrals for new and continuing international students. Serve as a liaison between students and faculty.

Assist in the coordination and planning for international student orientations, informational programs and workshops for international students. Assist in the development of workshops, seminars, events, and programs tailored to the specific issues of international students' which are related to the University and other professional entities (i.e., employment).

Advise international students and J-1 scholars on immigration requirements, personal, academic and cross-cultural matters. Serve as a resource for international student services staff and other campus units working with international students.

Stay abreast of best practices in international education and global engagement. Provide resource information to international and domestic students, faculty, and staff.

Serve as a liaison and advocate for international students and scholars as necessary in dealings with faculty, staff and administration. Make referrals to academic advisers, psychological counselors, and community agencies when appropriate. Assist international student groups with planning, understanding and overall involvement with Lawrence Technological University. Serve as an advisor to international student groups.

Maintain quality of, and continuing improvement in services, as well as information, to students on SEVIS requirements, procedures, and benefits. Responsible for the creation/maintenance of printed materials (i.e., university forms) and information for the IP website.

Coordinate and attend programs/events and meetings during evening and weekend hours when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Awareness of international student needs and a commitment to enhancing their educational experiences; the ability to work effectively within a diverse community of students and colleagues.

Experience working with non-immigrants and diverse populations is preferred.

Thorough working knowledge of immigration regulation and university policies.

F-1 and J-1 Visa Training and/or experience is required. Demonstrated ability to show respect for faculty, students, staff, and others; to focus on people being served; to relate to people in a friendly manner, and to be a team player.

Demonstrated strong organizational and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to establish priorities.

Ability to represent Lawrence Tech University with the Department of Homeland Security, SEVP, SACM, and other relevant constituents is required.

Demonstrated experience as part of a team and service-oriented work environment.

Ability to multitask, work independently, and manage complex projects. Ability to develop new programs, services, and initiatives for an international student population.

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, initiative, independence, thoroughness, accuracy, and a propensity for learning, the capacity to make difficult decisions quickly and the flexibility to move rapidly from one task to another.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Competence with technology and database management. Experience with SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) is preferred. Ability to type and use computer programs such as word processing (MS Office Suite preferred), e-mail, spreadsheets, and the ability to learn other programs pertinent to the position. Must be organized and be able to prioritize work, good communication skills, both written and oral, ability to deal with people from various age groups, backgrounds and level of education.

COMMENTS:

Hours may vary depending upon work assignment. This is a salaried - exempt position. Must be a self-starter and should have excellent written and oral communication skills, a strong work ethic, an ability to work independently, considerable energy and motivation, a willingness to travel, a good sense of humor, and an interest in becoming a contributing member of the LTU Admissions Team. An affinity for people is essential.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor degree preferred or 2 years' experience working in Higher Education or a service field. Preferred to have experience in working with international student support or recruitment.
