Scope of Responsibilities

Healthy Relationship education stands as a foundational pillar within the QuadEx model. Recognizing the integral role of relationship well-being in every aspect of a student's life is the beginning to ensure a comprehensive approach that nurtures students academically, socially and emotionally. The Balthrop Cassidy Fellowship is an initiative designed to revolutionize the way students understand, participate in, and derive meaning from relationships. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Students, Fellows are tasked with creating programs and structures that directly influence the lives of Duke students, with a focus on fostering a healthy campus community through caring and consensual relationships of various types.

Fellows will work closely with Duke's Office of Gender Violence Education and Outreach to track trends on campus and deliver programming that address said trends. Fellows will extend their impact by working directly with university departments and student organizations to foster integrated efforts in the relationship health and gender violence spaces on campus. Fellows are expected to adapt and share insights, tailoring their offerings specifically for current Duke Students.

  • Work closely with the Division of Student Affairs and Quad Ex to develop and deliver curriculum, trainings, and workshops on the topics of building and maintaining healthy relationships on campus. Primary stakeholders include but are not limited to New Students and Family Programs, the Office of Gender Violence Education and Outreach, and Housing and Residence Life.
  • Meet frequently with individual students and student group leaders to report on progress and garner feedback for the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Become expert in current Duke student culture surrounding relationship health and spread knowledge to related departments.
  • Meet with individual about their relationship health and gather data about how these experiences represent the larger Duke social culture
  • Identify creative solutions for students to contribute to healthy relationship efforts on both short and long-term bases
  • Serve as a liaison to departments advancing similar peer education goals (including but not limited to Women's Center, Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity, DuWell, and Office of Undergraduate Education). Coordinate and facilitate cross-departmental collaboration around gender violence prevention initiatives.
  • Assess program metrics and track outcomes.

    Must be able to familarize self with Duke University Campus and Student Culture surrounding relationship health and spread knowledge to related documents.

    • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality, understanding the sensitive nature of discussions around relationships, consent, and violence prevention.
    • Resilience in the face of challenges, coupled with strong problem-solving skills to address issues related to relationship health on campus.
    • Demonstrated ability to connect with diverse groups of faculty, administrators, staff and students in a selective collegiate environment.
    • Evidence of independent leadership and reliably following through on responsibilities.
    • Sustained and increasing responsibility in student organizations during student's undergraduate or graduate career (preferred).
    • Ability to translate high-level concepts into tangible action while maintaining attention to detail, independent problem solving, and ability to easily adapt to evolving university needs.
    • Sensitivity and awareness of cultural diversity, ensuring that relationship education initiatives are inclusive and resonate with the varied backgrounds and experiences of Duke students.
    • Excellent oral and written communication, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, along with a friendly manner appropriate to working with students, faculty, administrators, parents, alumni, and trustees.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and social media sources.
    • Experience with Adobe Design Suite, Sakai, HTML and WordPress is preferred.
