Carnegie Mellon’s Office of International Education (OIE) invites applications for the position of Director of International Student and Scholar Services. We especially welcome qualified candidates with experience in the field, who can contribute through their work/life experiences to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.  

The Director of International Student and Scholar Services will lead the administrative functions for F and J student and scholar services, focusing on policy setting, case management, and service delivery. They collaborate closely with the Office of International Education (OIE) Executive Director, supervise staff, and ensure compliance with complex government regulations. Additionally, they serve as the Responsible Officer (RO) for the Exchange Visitor Program, may assist with study abroad emergency response, and demonstrate cross-cultural sensitivity and leadership in international education.

Core responsibilities include:

Policy setting, review of office practices, communication, education, outreach, and case management, with a focus on delivering exceptional services in a post-COVID context while maximizing efficiency and maintaining a student/scholar-centric approach. Provide strategic and operational direction and serve as the primary contact for international student and scholar immigration services and concerns. Oversees managers and team leads responsible for foreign student and scholar advisors, immigration compliance, reporting, and document production. Leads F and J services, business practices, response to regulatory changes, and service provision. Manages study abroad emergency response in the absence of the OIE Executive Director and Director of  Study Abroad. Demonstrates cross-cultural sensitivity, effective communication skills, leadership, adaptability, and a deep understanding of F and J non-immigrant regulations and the SEVIS system. Works collaboratively with staff across campus, initiating and leading projects, and maintaining a keen attention to detail and sensitivity to deadlines. Qualifications:

Candidates must have knowledge of F and J immigration regulations, with at least five years of experience in student/scholar immigration issues and higher education administration, with at least 3 years at a high or very high research institution, strong analytical skills and oral and written communication skills.    Flexibility, excellence, and passion for the work are important qualities within the Office of International Education.   Inclusion, collaboration and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at CMU. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who is able to effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

US citizenship and/or Permanent Residence is required as this person will be a DSO/RO

Master's Degree or equivalent combination of training and experience

Experience working, living or studying abroad preferred.

Experience using Sunapsis international case management software strongly preferred.
