Description

This position is responsible for supporting the University’s efforts in providing global learning opportunities as an integral part of the UNA experience. Responsibilities include contributing to the specialized services provided by the department to help achieve the international education mission of the University, which includes: international recruitment and admissions, international student and scholar services, education abroad, academic English programs, global engagement, and international partnerships.

Essential Job Duties

  • Provide one-stop services regarding education abroad programs and scholarship and grant opportunities;
  • Ensure that prompt and accurate advising and assistance is available to students interested in overseas study, internships, work, research, and other cultural experiences;
  • Coordinate UNA international exchange programs and process in-bound and out-bound exchange student applications;
  • Develop and maintain education abroad databases and program information updates (e.g., student initial interest inquiry, program offerings, scholarship list, participation list, and alumni list);
  • Plan and lead pre-departure orientation and re-entry workshops for student participants;
  • Manage scholarships for exchange programs;
  • Collaborate with numerous campus departments to serve the needs of study abroad students;
  • Liaise with administrative offices, the international program offerings committee, university legal, and shared governance to develop, review, and update policies and procedures regarding education abroad safety and liability guidelines;
  • Monitor US government issued alerts for travel safety, security, health, and risk management;
  • Manage the mandatory travel insurance and medical release for all study abroad students, faculty, and staff;
  • Encourage and facilitate new faculty-led program development with global partner universities;
  • Develop and implement post-program evaluation forms to measure student satisfaction and learning outcomes;
  • Provide proactive advising services to outbound students;
  • Work with students and faculty advisors to complete academic pre-approval forms to ensure correct course selection and credit transfer;
  • Communicate with colleagues at partner universities to prepare logistics of students’ travel, housing, and course schedules;
  • Provide the Registrar with course equivalents and grades upon receipt of original transcript from host universities;
  • Stay in touch with individual study abroad participants regarding academic integration (hours/credits, language of instruction) and social adjustment at host university;
  • Serve as UNA’s first point-of-contact in case of emergency involving study abroad students, faculty, staff, and programs;
  • Liaise with other designated school officials (DSOs) to ensure that incoming exchange students comply with federal regulations;
  • Plan and organize information sessions on campus and at local community colleges to promote education abroad programs;
  • Attend Preview Day and SOAR sessions to promote education abroad opportunities;
  • Recruit and organize student abroad returnee volunteers to share their experiences with prospective study abroad participants and with local community members and civic organizations;
  • Contribute to global learning activities and programs such as global learning community, passport to the world, tasting the world, etc.;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required;
  • Master’s degree in international education or a related field is preferred;
  • Two years of education abroad program management experience is preferred;
  • Experience planning and organizing pre-departure, re-entry, and intercultural workshops is preferred;
  • Experience developing and managing study abroad and exchange programs is preferred;
  • Experience studying abroad as a college student is preferred.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
None

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Broad knowledge of education abroad best practices, especially in the area of international risk management;
  • Strong program marketing skills and student advising skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, staff, vendors, third-party program providers, international agents/partners, and the general public;
  • Strong problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team;
  • Proficient in Microsoft and Abobe software programs;
  • Ability to plan and organize pre-departure, re-entry, and intercultural workshops;
  • Ability to develop and manage study abroad and exchange programs.
