The Assistant Director of the Rinker Center for Study Away and International Education will have the primary responsibility for the administration of Furman’s portfolio of faculty-led study away three-week and semester length programs. The Assistant Director works within the Center for Engaged Learning (CEL) to forward the university’s strategic initiatives of The Furman Advantage, including ensuring that all students have access to high-quality, engaged learning experiences. The Assistant Director is an ambassador for the CEL by sharing its message with internal and external stakeholders and contributing to CEL initiatives such as Furman Engaged.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages a portfolio of customized faculty-led three-week and semester-long academic programs in the US and abroad.
  • Collaborates with faculty from initial concept to implementation on program design, logistics, marketing, student selection, and financial management.
  • Identifies reputable third-party providers and travel agencies for customized programs, and liaises between faculty and outside providers to develop customized faculty-led programs.
  • Review contracts from third-party providers and facilitate contract approval and execution processes.
  • Set and manage program budgets, submit invoices for payment, track program director spending, and exercise fiscal responsibility.
  • Monitors international security reports regarding safety and compliance for incidents that pose a risk to study away programs.
  • Facilitates risk management workshop series for faculty and staff leading customized study away programs.
  • Represents study away and international education at campus-wide events. Collaborates with the Director for Study Away and International Education on priorities associated with the University’s faculty-led study away programs, and performs special assignments and duties as assigned.
  • Ensures student accessibility by working with Student Life, Student Office of Accessibility Resources, and other offices with regard to students whose situation requires attention both before and during study away programs.
  • Works cooperatively with offices across campus to maintain records, refine policy, and support students and faculty in matters related to study away and international education.
  • Actively pursues appropriate professional development opportunities. Serves on university committees and teams as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with international education colleagues at the state, national, and international level.
  • Performs special assignments and other duties as assigned by the Director for Study Away and International Education.

Relationships:

Continuous contact with members of own work unit to plan, coordinate, collaborate, exchange information, and make suggestions related to mutual goals.

Daily contact with faculty members to answer questions, solve problems, and provide support and training regarding study away program development and implementation. Interactions require the listening, trouble-shooting, and understanding faculty members’ concerns and goals.

Frequent contact with Enrollment Services, Housing, Financial Services, Legal Counsel, and Student Life to coordinate and collaborate on mutual goals.

Frequent contact with third party providers and travel agents to coordinate faculty-led customized programs.

Occasional contact with community members and colleagues at the state, national, and international level to share information and promote the activities of the Rinker Center for Study Away and International Education.

Responsibility for Final Decisions:

Responsible for own work.  Tasks involve multiple procedures and database management.  Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.

Reports To:  Director for Study Away and International Education

Most tasks are performed independently.  Some tasks are completed through close cooperation with Rinker Center staff and other university offices.



Bachelor’s degree required.

Master’s degree preferred.

Three to five years of work experience in a related field required.

Excellent organizational skills and careful attention to detail.

Demonstrated ability to work well with individuals from diverse cultural, national, and linguistic backgrounds, and to collaborate successfully with diverse audiences across an institution. Foreign language ability desirable.

Ability to effectively manage numerous short-term and long-term tasks, and to exercise strong judgment in stressful situations.

Experience in Microsoft Office including word processing and spreadsheets required.  Terra Dotta experience desirable.
