The International Students & Scholars Office(ISSO) at Iowa State University is currently seeking candidates for an International Orientation and Pre-Arrival Coordinator. This person will be hired as a Student Services Specialist II.

International Student Orientation

  • Coordinates and administers all aspects of orientation of new international students by developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative orientation programming

  • Coordinates and administers all pre-arrival accommodations for new international students including hotels and shuttles

  • Prepares, compiles, and analyzes evaluations for new student orientation programs to ensure continuous improvement that will meet the evolving needs of new international students 

  • Supervises the Orientation Student Support team by hiring, training, and managing graduate assistants and student workers

  • Prepares and revises media presentations, publications, training manuals, and reports 

  • Creates and revises comprehensive and clear orientation webpages, schedules, and pre-arrival documentation for incoming students.  

  • Serves as the ISSO liaison to the Office of Admissions and Intensive English And Orientation Program (IEOP)

  • Coordinate and administer off-cycle orientations for Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP) as well as check-ins for late arrival students


Pre-Arrival Communication and Advising

  • Communicate with incoming students in regards to pre-arrival questions including obtaining visas, arriving on campus, late arrivals, and completing immigration check-in

  • Connect international students with appropriate university resources.

  • Creates communication plan that targets international yield accepts that is implemented by salesforce in ISU Admissions 

  • Coordinates with Iowa State University (ISU) Admissions to ensure an effective communication flow between enrollment management, and new student orientation


Immigration Processing & Record Management

  • Create and maintain student records in the Department of Homeland Security’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and department software databases according to USCIS and DOS regulations.

  • Issue immigration documents and forms in SEVIS via the department software intermediate database for student status verification 

  • Manage international student reports and lists

  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). 



  • Collaborate with International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) staff for information sharing, procedure clarifications, orientation and program planning, training, immigration regulation interpretation, and policy development.

  • Sits on various university wide committee as needed to represent ISSO and collaborate with other departments.

  • Serves on the University Orientation Committee to improve the communication and relationship between International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) and academic colleges

  • Collaborates with campus partners to support international students

  • Manage temporary housing and orientation budget



  • Prepares and revises media presentations, publications, training manuals, and reports 

  • Able to assist with programming

  • Able to teach a section of the International First Year Experience course


Other duties as assigned.


Applicants must have U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status to serve in the roles of DSO (Designated School Official) and ARO (Alternate Responsible Officer), per Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience

Experience working in an international related field
Master's degree
Experience working in higher education
Experience in event planning
