The Georgia Institute of Technology is accepting applications for the position of Education Abroad Advisor in the Office of International Education, a unit of Academic Affairs.  

Located in Atlanta, Georgia Tech is a Research I institution with approximately 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students.? Georgia Tech has 6 academic colleges:? College of Design, College of Computing, College of Engineering (approximately 60% of enrollment), Scheller College of Business, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, and College of Sciences. 

In addition to its general role with campus internationalization, the Office of International Education (OIE) serves approximately 7,000+ international students and scholars, 2,000+ education abroad students, and 900+ International Plan Participants.?  

There are 12 full-time staff including this full-time Education Abroad Advisor, who work with faculty-led study abroad programs.? Georgia Tech currently offers more than 120 exchange programs and approximately 50 faculty-led study abroad programs.?  

The Education Abroad Advisor reports to the Associate Director of Education Abroad and is primarily responsible for coordinating the development, organization and management of the Oxford and Pacific Programs (www.oxford.gatech.edu; www.pacific.gatech.edu), and for providing general advising to the overall faculty-led study abroad student population.  The responsibilities of the Education Abroad Advisor are: 

  • Work with the Academic Program Directors on program development and all aspects of program organization and management including:  
  • Work through provider to secure housing. 
  • Negotiate group airfare through provider. 
  • Liaise with universities and other entities abroad to arrange classrooms, to arrange site visits, and to meet other program needs. 
  • Work with program faculty to make arrangements for museum visits, field trips, and other non-lecture academic activities that provider cannot handle.   
  • Work with Legal Affairs and GT Purchasing to obtain approval for all program contracts. 
  • Work with program faculty and staff to file reimbursement and other required paperwork. 
  • Market programs and recruit participants (including but not limited to the development and maintenance of print and electronic materials, planning events, responding to inquiries). 
  • Serve as main contact for students, faculty, staff, parents, vendors, and university partners on all non-academic matters. 
  • Advise students participating in the programs from initial interest through reintegration on the home campus. 
  • Develop orientation and other preparatory materials about logistics, policies, procedures, etc. in printed and electronic formats for students, professors, and staff involved with the program. 
  • Establish budgets for programs, monitor program expenditures, manage currency contract purchases.   
  • Conduct program assessment and use feedback to make or recommend changes to subsequent programs. 
  • Maintain program records and program “memory”, including development of an electronic scrapbook.  
  • Organize trainings/programs; provide materials to assist participants with their cross-cultural development.  
  • Serve as short-term on-site coordinator as needed for either or both programs (typically 2-3 weeks if needed). 
  • Serve as one of two general advisors for faculty-led study abroad students, advising students on faculty-led study abroad options, directing students to the appropriate program director contact and resources, and ensuring faculty-led study abroad course registration.  
  • Oversee and maintain the online faculty-led study abroad pre-departure orientation.
  • Along with other EA staff, market and recruit for GT programs. This position is included in the regular advisor rotation for marketing events.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Director of Education Abroad.  

Expected Start date: August 1, 2022 

The position is classified as Education Abroad Advisor, Grade A7.

Basic requirements: 

  • Required to have a Bachelor’s degree 
  • Required to have three to four years of work experience 
  • Required to have international experience (work/internship, study, or living outside of United States and its territories) 
  • Required to have strong written and verbal communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with multiple audiences, both internal (e.g. OIE staff) and external (e.g. students, faculty) 
  • Required to have flexibility and strong problem-solving skills  

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Preferred to have work experience in study abroad 
  • Preferred to have experience working in a university environment 
  • Preferred to have experience working collaboratively with faculty and administrators 
  • Preferred to have proficiency in a foreign language 
  • Preferred to have experience with Terra Dotta.
