Job Description

The International Student Advisor I, under general supervision, assists with providing support for international and sponsored students. Assists office leadership in providing services to international and sponsored students. Has access to protected information under FERPA and HIPAA.


  • Assist international and sponsored students on procedures required of the Homeland Security on acquiring and maintaining employment eligibility status; confers with Homeland Security officials regarding reinstatement for University students; approves travel outside the United States for international students.
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of student programming activities such as new student check-in and orientations, seminars, special topic workshops, and joint programming with other campus or community entities.
  • Serves and advises international students on various standard issues impacting them, such as educational issues, immigration, health insurance, and health care.
  • Serves as a member of a team focused on one specialized area within the office, which could include areas such as student programming, immigration advising, health insurance, publications, and serves on committees or teams in collaborative efforts as required.
  • Advises international student organizations, assists with continuous improvement efforts in the office, occasionally travels off campus to fulfill office business responsibilities and assists in the coordination of efforts between various on and off campus entities.
  • Reviews student admission packages to ensure prospective students have proper documents for issuance of Form I-20 and maintain all required documentation and files; monitors and tracks expiration dates of current students' Visa authorizations; assists with maintenance of international student records, databases and any other advising related administrative tasks, such as preparing memos, drafting correspondence, researching and preparing reports, estimated expenses, federal documents, and applications.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • No prior experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with international people.
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate technical information effectively and diplomatically.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be a permanent resident or US citizen as required by Homeland Security.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the US Department of Homeland Security's - Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
