Position summary: With the Director of Student Health, Safety and Security, coordinates campus-wide implementation of international health, safety and security policies, procedures, and activities that support the health, safety and security of all University of Missouri students participating on study abroad programs or university-related international activities. Serves as back up for the Director in providing student international emergency response and services for the University of Missouri campus.
Major duties and Responsibilities:
20% Under the supervision of the Director of Student International Health, Safety and Security, responds to emergencies impacting University of Missouri students participating in study abroad programs and University-related international activities. Is available 24/7 as needed to ensure full response, serving as the initial responder on a rotating basis. Keeps the Director informed of developments and ongoing actions. Coordinates with program leaders and in-country providers to execute emergency response plans as incidents occur. Collaborates with campus stakeholders, including the Office of Risk Management, and Office of General Counsel, in responding to incidents. Exercises sound judgment in managing communications during emergencies to protect student confidentiality. In larger-scale emergencies both the Sr. Coordinator and the Director will work closely together while handling independent areas of responsibility. Serves as the alternative leader and incident manager when the Director is not available. Works evening and weekend hours as needed.
25% Oversees enrollment in the campus-wide International Travel Registry for student-related international travel for students, program leaders and non-enrolled participants. Responds to questions and provides information regarding international travel registration policies and procedures. Conducts follow up to ensure completion of required materials. Collaborates with supervisor to plan, develop and implement campus-wide outreach to facilitate enrollment as required by the University of Missouri Collected Rules and Regulations. As directed by the University's higher risk student travel review committee, provides health, safety and security information and in-person pre-travel health, safety and security briefings for students enrolled in the International Travel Registry traveling to higher risk destinations.
20% Employs in-depth knowledge of best practices in the field of Education Abroad to recommend revisions to current health, safety and security training and development of new training for all MU students participating on study abroad programs or University-related international travel and the MU faculty and staff members leading student programs abroad. Manages campus-wide distribution and completion of mandatory student on-line general predeparture orientation. Assists supervisor in developing and providing information and training for coordinators and directors in colleges/schools/divisions administering study abroad programs and University-related international travel and ensuring information they provide to students is consistent and up-to-date. Collaborates with supervisor to find or create recurring opportunities to communicate with and meet with key stakeholders to discuss international health, safety and security. Collaborates with supervisor to develop University-wide policies to comply with the University of Missouri Collected Rules and Regulations.
10% Conducts international risk monitoring assessments and suggests and implements risk mitigation opportunities. Monitors information and alerts from advisory services (Department of State, Centers for Disease Control, and the University's security information providers) and coordinates with supervisor to ensure timely delivery of health, safety and security information to the University's students and student-related travelers abroad and other key stakeholders. Performs in-depth research on assigned health, safety and security topics.
10% Coordinates obtaining and compiling information needed for emergency response and compliance with federal regulations. Obtains and compiles emergency contact information for all study abroad and University-related travel abroad participants and programs. Coordinates compliance with the Clery Act in collaboration with supervisor and the University of Missouri Police Department. Assists with registration in the U.S. Department of State Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
10% Assists supervisor in maintaining University-wide incident report database to track the type, number and severity of incidents impacting MU students abroad in accordance with evolving resources and best practices. Identifies opportunities to maximize the university's security software and other resources to support student health, safety and security, including print and electronic materials. Collaborates with supervisor and Communications team to create and maintain state of the art health, safety and security information on website. Stays informed about new information technology applications to continually improve student support. Creates reports, charts and graphs, using word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
5% Subscribes to and monitors health, safety and security listservs, including the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), OSAC Academic Working Group (AWG). Subscribes to and posts to Pulse listserv for full-time international safety and security professionals. Contributes to special or ongoing projects related to international health, safety, and security. Travels to conduct risk assessments of the University's international programs. Manages operations of International Health, Safety and Security in the absence of the Director. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
A Bachelor's degree
The preferred candidate will have a Master’s degree. Four years of administrative experience in higher education or relevant organization. Two year’s experience in education abroad, international education, security or related field. Experience living, working, studying, interning, or volunteering in another cultural context, and the ability to articulate the value thereof. Experience using problem-solving in varied situations that require significant analysis and interpretation. Experience producing oral and written communication and public speaking. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Experience with data analysis and reporting. Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects, in accordance with the priorities set by supervisor. Familiarity with the Terra Dotta software for study abroad. Ability to clearly and respectfully communicate with all levels of an organization. Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate student related laws such as FERPA, HIPPA, Title IX, ADA, and the Clery Act and student behavior policies. Ability and willingness to travel. Available to be on call for emergencies outside of regular business hours.
