About the Department
The Institute for Global Engagement (IGE) coordinates the university’s internationalization initiatives, including the management and development of its institutional partnerships, education abroad opportunities, international student and scholar support services, and the International Studies curriculum. In addition to its administrative unit, IGE is organizationally comprised of International Student and Scholars Services, Education Abroad, and the International Studies Minor, and the Executive Director supervises and mentors the directors and instructors of those programs. IGE works with Western’s academic colleges and university services to develop strategies for internationalizing the curriculum and to support co-curricular activities that are globally focused. IGE also works with partners beyond the university to connect Western’s learning communities to counterparts around the world.

About the Position
The Executive Director of the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE) is a 1.0 FTE Academic Administrator appointment.
The Executive Director of the Institute for Global Engagement (IGE) within the division of Academic Affairs is the Senior International Officer for Western Washington University, with the work focused through the various IGE programs. The Executive Director provides the University community with leadership and oversight of support services for international students, study abroad and exchange programs, strategic international partnerships and agreements, and international scholar programs. The Executive Director also provides strategic thinking and advocacy for the University’s internationalization efforts.
As IGE’s head, the Executive Director is the primary planner, leader and spokesperson for and is responsible for the overall leadership and management of its programs, including academic programs. The Executive Director is responsible for developing teamwork within IGE and with affiliated units. The Executive Director will seek to maintain and strengthen IGE by promoting shared investment, shared governance, collegiality, and collaboration amongst affiliated individuals and units.
The Executive Director maintains a strong commitment to IGE and the University and the ability to maintain high standards is central to the role. The Executive Director recognizes the importance of best practices in internationalization in higher education, seeks to remain current, and participates in international education professional organizations. The continuing development and maintenance of strong planning is essential.
Supervision and Communication
The Executive Director reports to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Executive Director is responsible for providing leadership in the University’s internationalization efforts.
Works with University leadership on strategic goals for internationalization efforts
Develops and oversees the implementation of internationalization action plans to reach the stated goals
Presents opportunities that fit within the University’s goals to University leadership for consideration
Represents the University to current and potential University partners and other external constituents
Public policy advocacy as it relates to international education and comprehensive campus internationalization
Chairs the International Curriculum Committee, the International Advisory Board, and the International Partnership Committee
The Executive Director is responsible for leadership, management, and operations of IGE.
Provides leadership on promoting equity and inclusion in the classroom and workplace
Works with faculty and staff to support goals and objectives consistent with the affiliated departments, colleges and the university
Supervises staff positions associated with IGE: the Directors of Education Abroad and International Student and Scholar Services, the International Studies Minor instructors, and the IGE Administrative Assistant
Serves as a liaison and communicates with other internal and external entities
Provides leadership in IGE operations
Participates in faculty and staff searches related to IGE
Maintains current and historical records for IGE
The Executive Director is responsible for facilitating academic program development.
Oversees and assists in curriculum development including coordinating curricular procedures for revisions, new courses, course deletions, etc.
Maintains or oversees maintenance of information sources such as catalog, website, etc.
Provides assistance in academic scheduling to department chairs or associate chairs
Leads outcome assessment
Leads academic program reviews
The Executive Director is responsible for resource planning and management.
Manages the IGE budget
Plans for resources and allocations with input from IGE affiliated faculty and staff
Provides annual budget reportage to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs
Monitors IGE needs
Participates in fund raising for IGE
The Executive Director is responsible for other duties related to IGE.
Stays abreast of policies and procedures related to IGE
Advocates for IGE
Promotes faculty research and student involvement in various aspects of internationalization
Represents IGE at appropriate events and venues
Develops and maintains constructive and collegial relationships with other university units
The Executive Director is responsible for providing leadership in the University’s internationalization efforts. The Executive Director will work with University leadership on appropriate goals for internationalization efforts, develop and oversee the implementation of internationalization action plans to reach the stated goals, present opportunities that fit within the University’s goals to University leadership for consideration, and represent the University to current and potential University partners and other external constituents.
The Executive Director is responsible for the leadership, management and operation of IGE. The Executive Director coordinates and manages the IGE undergraduate curriculum, including the International Studies minor, which includes working closely with faculty and staff in multiple academic departments and colleges.
The Executive Director supervises and directs the faculty and staff involved with IGE to develop and periodically review the IGE mission, strategic objectives and actions consistent with the mission of the university and to develop new programs consistent with the mission. The Executive Director is responsible for maintaining collaborative programs and relationships with academic departments and faculty throughout the university in order to support and promote International Studies, Education Abroad, International Student and Scholar Services, and related programs and to explore new and innovative ways to foster collaboration between IGE and other university programs.
The Executive Director is responsible for the development, allocation and management of IGE’s budget including: controlling and directing expenditures from IGE’s operating and self-sustaining funds as well as resource planning and allocation to its various programs. The Executive Director has approval authority for all proposals emanating from IGE to external agencies, both public and private.
The Executive Director will participate with others in the Academic Affairs unit in decisions related to planning, establishing, modifying, reorganizing, creating, merging or eliminating programs, departments and courses of instruction, including curriculum development and monitoring as deemed appropriate by the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The Executive Director provides leadership in managing the duties and responsibilities of staff at IGE including standards of performance evaluation, assignments, responsibilities, scheduling of those responsibilities and duties, as well as the recruitment and development of staff members.
The Executive Director will provide leadership in program evaluation and planning, including providing leadership with assessment efforts.
The Executive Director will represent IGE and provide leadership in all activities, including:
Development work, including friend and fund-raising, and community outreach.
Grant and contract writing and in seeking financial support for IGE and the University from both governmental and private sources,
Represent IGE to the senior administration and community.
Serve as the University’s Fulbright Scholar Liaison;
Promote the increase of international student and faculty diversity on campus as well increase the participation of students of diverse backgrounds and means in study abroad.
Provide leadership to promote an equitable and inclusive working and learning environments.
Strengthen efforts to identify and/or develop opportunities promoting equity and inclusion for IGE and the university.
Participate in all-University planning and policy formation. Develop, interpret, amend and enforce written policies and procedures governing the work force to advance the mission of the institution and in ways consistent with state laws, and collective bargaining and other agreements.
Develop and maintain a constructive and collegial administrative relationship with all college and administrative units of the University, including the faculty and staff unions.
Directors and Executive Directors are evaluated every year. Every three years this evaluation includes information from a wider audience and will include faculty and staff involved with IGE, other administrators, external stakeholders, and other sources the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs deems appropriate.
An earned terminal degree at time of application
Five years’ experience in international education administration
Demonstrated commitment to transformational international learning experiences

Previous experience as a Senior International Officer at an institution of higher education or its equivalent
Experience in risk management
Experience working and/or living in a country outside the United States
Experience in international studies curriculum support and management
Experience in development and fund-raising
Track record in securing internal and external funding
Experience with the Fulbright Scholar Program for faculty
Faculty experience preferred and/or experience working directly with students
