Department Summary The Division of Global Engagement (DGE) works to make the University of Oregon a more global university. In 21st century higher education, international engagement is not an optional extra: as noted in UO's Academic Plan, it is a core mission, essential to a thriving, socially salient, intellectually robust, academic community. It is part of the normal functioning of every school, college, department, and center. DGE works to support and integrate the wide range of international engagements, global-scale projects, and transnational partnerships launched and maintained in our many academic units. Units within DGE consist of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), Global Education Oregon (GEO), Global Studies Institute (GSI), and Mills International Center.
Position Summary This GEO Study Abroad Advisor reports to the Assistant Director-Advising and is responsible for providing support to students considering and participating in study abroad programs and international internships. The primary duties of this position will be to advise and recruit students, interview applicants, participate in the selection process, and lead pre-departure orientations. This position will also assist the GEO Institutional Relations unit with publicity efforts, which requires excellent written and verbal communication skills. Additionally, the Advisor will assist in managing applications and tracking enrollments and admissions for GEO programs. Other programmatic tasks may be assigned based on unit needs and the Advisor’s skill set.
Minimum Requirements • Bachelor’s degree in relevant academic discipline. • One year of full time employment experience (or part-time equivalent) that demonstrates experience with international education; student support services; advising, mentorship, and training; OR international/inter-cultural program development or program management.
Professional Competencies • Demonstrated commitment to international education and the promotion of cross-cultural understanding. • Study, employment, travel, and/or residence abroad. • Ability to relate well to students, faculty, and staff, especially in a team setting. • Proficiency with software applications including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheet, and desktop publishing. • Demonstrated effectiveness in written and oral communication.
Preferred Qualifications • Master’s degree in relevant academic discipline. • One-year experience advising students in higher education setting.
