Position Summary: The Office of International Programs at Southern Oregon University (SOU) serves as the campus hub for International Student Services and Domestic Student Study Away experiences. The Education Abroad Advisor will be required to work independently and is responsible for day-to-day operations of SOU's study away opportunities with exchange partner universities, 3rd party providers and the National Student Exchange.
• Two years professional experience administering education abroad programs
• Experience advising higher education students on education abroad offerings
• Experience creating and implementing marketing strategies for study abroad
• Must be an American Citizen
• At least two years Study Abroad Advising or equivalent experience
• Willingness to periodically travel domestically and internationally
Preferred Qualification: • Master’s degree in field related to international education
• Proficiency in a foreign language
• Project management experience
• A record of active participation in appropriate organizations (such as NAFSA, Forum on Education Abroad, EAIE, and their state and regional affiliates)
• Proficiency in the following computer tools and applications: InDesign, Adobe Acrobat Professional, and Qualtrics
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Excellent command of the English language, written and oral, and effective interpersonal communication skills, including administrators, staff, and off-campus community members (i.e. parents) • Maintains knowledge of trends in study away programming, policies, procedures and stays up to date on federal regulations and academic requirements as applied to program participants. • Exemplifies cross-cultural sensitivity and adaptation skills. • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication and presentation skills • Shows a proven ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and external professional groups on multiple program projects at various stages of development. • Thinks critically and strategically, regarding adherence to university policies, which include safety, risk management, liability, and crisis management. • Possesses experience in event planning and designing promotional materials. • Demonstrates strong organizational skills and attention to detail including prioritizing, keeping track of information or work in progress, ensuring accuracy, multitasking, flexibility, and handling interruptions appropriately. • Works effectively as a member of a team and independently. • Exhibits a strong work ethic and accountability in completing work. • Provides excellent service to students; exhibits superb advising and counseling skills with the ability to maintain confidentiality. • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds. • Strong organizational skills • Demonstrated public speaking experience • Ability to utilize technology to support advising, recruitment and program management • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and student data management • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment • Knowledge of academic and international programs
