The Office of International Services at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking to fill the position of Assistant Director. Under minimal supervision, manages the international services function which provides advice and counsel to international students and faculty and internal consulting to academic management staff. Oversees and supervises the daily administration and support services of the university’s international student and scholar population. Coaches, mentors and trains international services advising staff on work assignments, objectives, problem resolution and personal and team development. Monitors the effectiveness of programs and policies and develop new plans or procedures consistent with regulatory compliance, emerging trends and efficient departmental operations. Liaises with external groups including the Department of Homeland Security, Social Security Administration, Department of Motor Vehicles, and the Department of State to resolve issues or provide and receive information. Coaches, counsels and assists academic department management and faculty non-immigration regulations and procedures and recommended course of action. Advises and counsels international students and faculty on regulatory and administrative issues related their immigration status including: immigration and visa procedures, maintaining legal status, employment status, extension of stay, change of status, cultural and financial needs, travel regulations, etc. Oversees the development of orientation programs, immigration seminars, workshops and social activities and events. Plans, assigns and reviews work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met. Hires, trains, develops and manages staff to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives. Performs other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. Qualifications include Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, humanities or a related field required. Master’s degree in higher education, international studies or a related field preferred. Strong knowledge of immigration laws, regulations and procedures. Ability to meet both the USDHS’s regulatory requirements to be a Designated School Official (F-1 program) and the U.S. Department of State’s J-1 Visitor Program as an Alternate Responsible Officer. Minimum of five years’ experience is required. Knowledge of the SEVIS system. Effective leadership and management skills and the ability to communicate effectively with people from various cultural backgrounds.
