Reporting to the Study Abroad Director, applies advanced, specialized student services expertise, advises department/college/school or Graduate Division management, faculty, and students on the most complex student issues as well as manages a portfolio of faculty-led and exchange programs.
Independently advises students and resolves student services related issues on the full range of academic, cultural and logistical issues inherent within any study abroad program. Recommends solutions to program requirement issues. Advice may include not-clearly-defined programs such as independent study programs, interdisciplinary programs, or multiple programs. Works independently under general supervision. Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues related to UCSC study abroad programs. Works with the Global Engagement management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures with regard to UCSC study abroad programs.
Provides advice to students on the full range of study abroad program opportunities, academic, and legal requirements to participate in UCSC study abroad programs as well as UCEAP programs. UCSC study abroad programs, including faculty-led, exchange, experiential and other programs, are growing rapidly and the UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) currently offers more than 200 program options at 110 universities in 34 countries. Has in-depth knowledge of academic systems and course offerings of study abroad programs in their portfolio as well as general knowledge of all the other study abroad program options available to UCSC students. Has general knowledge of campus academic departments, schools and colleges, major and degree requirements, to match a student's interests, academic/linguistic/cultural preparation and goals to the appropriate international program. The Assistant Director is expected to manage and oversee student recruitment, admissions, pre-departure preparation, health and safety requirements, and re-entry activities.
As UCSC continues to develop campus-based study abroad programs, including faculty-led, exchanges, experiential opportunities, and other relationships with institutions overseas, the Assistant Director will work directly with faculty, campus departments and international partners in the development of these opportunities and provide administrative oversight. The Assistant Director will also manage a portfolio of programs and continue to play an important role in the development and advising of new UCSC study abroad options in the future.
The Assistant Director is expected to participate in divisional initiatives, and contribute to improving work processes within Global Engagement to achieve divisional goals and objectives. This position is also expected to demonstrate leadership and advanced problem-solving skills when addressing challenges, and to help with training and mentoring less experienced team members. This position will operate with autonomy to organize their time, manage their program portfolios, manage their student caseload, and to meet office and program deadlines. Works independently under general supervision.
Bachelor's degree in related area or combination of equivalent experience and/or training
Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques for study abroad programs.
Working knowledge of study abroad program development.
Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership.
Experience and expertise utilizing study abroad databases, such as Symplicity, Terra Dotta, and/or ViaTRM.
Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
Knowledge of overseas university structures, academic strengths, and systems.
Ability to manage multiple tasks with highly demanding workload and under pressure of deadlines.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking in a variety of settings.
Ability to organize and prioritize work without direct supervision, as part of a unit of professional staff members.
Master's degree in related area or combination of equivalent experience and/or training.
Experience living and/or working abroad.
Minimum of five years of experience working in international education.
Experience managing a broad range of study abroad program types, including faculty-led and exchanges.
Experience with study abroad program development and assessment.
