Under the supervision of the Director of Study Abroad Center, the Lead Advisor for Inbound and Custom Programs will develop and manage comprehensive programming of educational opportunities for inbound international students and custom programs for outbound UCI students.
Inbound students: The selected candidate will have the oversight of the management of a portfolio of inbound UCI bilateral exchange programs and UCEAP reciprocity programs, as well as the creation of custom programs for inbound international students. The candidate will provide individual and group advising throughout all phases of the international education process, including but not limited to the application process, registration and payment, intercultural adjustment, adapting to the US academic culture, housing, health and safety in the US context. She/he will organize various orientations (International Student Welcome and Farewell) and other intercultural programming and evaluate these sessions on a regular basis.
Custom UCI International Programs: The selected candidate will also develop and manage short-term Study Abroad programs led by UCI faculty and/or staff. Included in this process is developing logistical and operations plans for these programs, coordinating outreach and marketing for these programs across campus. This role requires a high level of organizational skills, independence, and responsiveness. It includes extensive coordination and interaction with the UCI faculty, staff, and vendors for recruitment, enrollment, and preparation of students, as well as assisting with program logistics and expense reconciliations.
The selected candidate is expected to have general knowledge of campus academic departments, schools and colleges, major and degree requirements to match a student's interests, academic/linguistic/cultural preparation and goals to the appropriate program. Apply in-depth knowledge of academic and course offerings of international programs in his/her portfolio. In collaboration with academic specialists on campus, create specific course options abroad for students in advisor’s portfolio of UCI academic schools and departments.
Position involves cooperation with staff at the UCEAP System wide and Program Providers, and coordination with relevant academic and administrative offices at UCI.
UCI Study Abroad Center
The mission of the Study Abroad Center is to foster a culture at UCI in which study abroad is expected and achievable for all students.
The Center reports to the Office of Global Engagement and assists students in participating in programs abroad that offer unique academic opportunities, international learning and personal development while making progress toward their UCI degree. Graduates who have studied abroad become future leaders – in public, private and non-profit sectors – with a more nuanced understanding of other countries and cultures as well as greater self-awareness and self-confidence. We aim to ensure that our students’ study abroad experiences help them affect positive change in the world, both locally and globally.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in higher education, advising/mentoring a diverse university student population.
Demonstrated skill in creating, writing, and implementing policies, protocols, forms, instructions and handbooks with appropriate technical content.
Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety issues in education abroad, advising, and program and policy development.
Substantial experience designing and implementing outreach activities and training.
Excellent cross-cultural communication skills, both oral and written; and ability to effectively communicate in a variety of situations, including interpersonal and formal large-group settings to multiple audiences.
Excellent customer service and student relations skills.
Strong and organizational skills, ability to handle details and prioritize workload.
Ability to work and interact effectively with people who have different skills, backgrounds and experiences.
Ability to work independently and cooperatively as a team member.
Proficiency using Horizon and other software programs (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software, etc.) to accomplish assignments. Proficiency with social media.
Previous experience living, studying or working abroad.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends including respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
Experience in records management, database collection, analysis, and word processing software
Master’s degree in international relations, international education, higher education, public administration or a related field.
Experience developing and implementing marketing plan.
Experience developing or managing programs or projects.
Foreign Language skills
