A number of countries operate sponsored student programs as part of their efforts to develop a highly trained workforce for the 21st Century. Sponsored students typically have nearly complete funding for degree programs provided by government agencies, non-profits or corporate sources. Funds normally cover tuition, living costs and incidentals. Due to the highly competitive nature of these programs, sponsored students are among the best and brightest from their respective countries. In order to continue to be competitive in attracting these talented undergraduate and graduate students and to gain visibility with and access to sponsoring organizations and funding sources, this position will establish and maintain an institutional presence for this purpose.
In addition, this position seeks to align and support recruitment, where feasible, with MSU and International Studies and Programs’ strategic directions. Examples could include assisting in recruitment-related aspects of the Asia Nexus Initiative, Alliance for African Partnership, and the area and thematic studies centers.
The position reports administratively to the Senior Associate Director for International Admissions in the Office of Admissions. It is funded and performance is reviewed jointly by the Office of Admissions, the Graduate School and International Studies and Programs.
Job Summary: Help inform appropriate student recruitment goals, including new sponsored students from regions which align with broader institutional goals. Participate in developing and implementing the strategic plan for countries in which MSU will recruit sponsored international students. Coordinate with MSU admissions and graduate programs to identify and build linkages to sponsored international students. Market and recruit students to MSU through global travel and virtual engagement (which must be coordinated with admissions and the academic colleges for undergraduate and graduate student recruitment respectively). Educate academic and support units across the campus regarding sponsored student opportunities and train them on steps they can take to attract highly qualified and funded sponsored students. Identify opportunities for “faculty ambassadors” and others to augment marketing and recruitment efforts while in travel status abroad, and to coordinate such efforts. Work with International Sponsored Student Programs in the Office for International Students and Scholars to ensure: timely response to applicants and funding sources; effective involvement of appropriate departments on campus; a smooth transition for and support of sponsored students on campus; and consistent relations with sponsoring agencies.
Requirements: Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in professional admissions work at a regionally accredited institution, including planning and implementing admissions programs, developing and implementing marketing and recruitment plans and strategies, researching and analyzing admissions data: professional experience in a specialized admissions area; making formal presentations; working with the public; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
