Associates degree in a related field. Bachelor's degree preferred. Two years of previous work experience in international education, international travel, study abroad, academic advisement, or a related field. Previous experience living, working or studying abroad preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
Advises current Sam Houston State University (SHSU) students, the university community, and parents on the full range of study abroad programs offered at SHSU.
Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):
Advises students on all aspects of study abroad including administrative and academic policies, application procedures, and scholarship opportunities. Processes study abroad applications for acceptance decisions. Provides standard advising for students and faculty on various issues impacting global education opportunities, such as personal, financial aid, academic, health insurance and healthcare, travel, and cultural needs of students. Responsible for application management for study abroad participants via office software (Via TRM) and reporting on students going abroad to designated risk managers on campus. Performs data reporting on demand and maintains all records. Presents study abroad information sessions to students and parents. Organizes study abroad fairs, including communications with representatives invited to the campus, and occasional night and weekend events. Stays current on regulations, best practices, and developments in international education. Responsible for assisting with faculty-led programs including conducting workshops and orientation for faculty and students. Schedules and conducts pre-departure and returnee workshops and orientations for participants. Assists in advising for study abroad scholarship resources/sources. Promotes study abroad on-campus through study abroad events, resource fairs, social media, and classroom presentations. Serves as a liaison to affiliated education abroad partners on and off campus. Triages issues that arise during the student study abroad application/program, including liaising with external and internal departments, organizations, and universities. Facilitates program development with internal and external partners, including international representatives. Represents the office at campus events, orientations, and other events as needed during regular business hours and outside of regular business hours. Acts as Assistant National Student Exchange Coordinator. Provides additional support to the Office of International Programs for special programs, short programs, international partnerships, and student activities. Provides information in a variety of formats (one-on-one meetings, classroom presentations, coordination of fairs, etc.) on study abroad program options, application process, pre-departure orientation, visa process, insurance, course transfer process, and funding options. Leads study abroad programming and events ensuring they align with national best practices. Event participation to include fairs, returnee programs, orientation, and communication for outgoing study abroad students. Manages and supervises the student ambassador program, develops and evaluates the program. Represents the office at campus events, orientations, and other events as needed. Helps support faculty in developing and implementing faculty-led programs. Maintains study abroad software/application portal, and social media, program and documentation updating, liaising with University and external stakeholders, creating and facilitating programming for study abroad, and participation reporting. Promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts within the office and at the institution. Performs other related duties as assigned.
