The Office of Global Engagement is seeking an International Student Advisor to provide guidance to international students and exchange visitors regarding non-immigrant regulations and benefits associated with their F or J visa status in the USA. The advisors assist to ensure compliance with federal non-immigrant regulations and coordinate with other units to support the international student population at Utah State University.
Review of applications will begin in early August 2021, and posting will remain open until the positions are filled. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2021.
Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the federal Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
Understand, apply, and advise on F/J visa regulations and policies, federal guidance, Presidential Proclamations, U.S. Department of State visa issuance updates, etc.
Provide active case management to an assigned caseload of students.
Monitor enrollment utilizing reports from the USU Banner and Terra Dotta systems.
Determine eligibility and authorize non-immigrant benefits for individuals with F/J visa status in the USA.
Maintain accurate non-immigrant records in SEVIS and the USU Terra Dotta database.
Assist with international student orientation sessions, workshops, trainings.
Act as a liaison between students, faculty, staff, other departments, and external constituents including the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
Function as liaison either:
Between USU, sponsors (foreign governments, private companies, etc.), and students, or
Between the Study Abroad team and incoming exchange students.
Assist with the maintenance of the Terra Dotta database including updating copy and configuration of the ISSS Portal.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (required to serve as DSO and ARO).
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word).
Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including adeptness in relating easily, effectively, and equitably with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Efficient in organizing resources and establishing priorities with minimal supervision.
Skilled at records maintenance with superior attention to detail.
Ability to resolve complex issues including the ability to read and interpret complex immigration regulations and apply them effectively to individual cases.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Capable of maintaining confidential information.
Knowledge and understanding of federal regulations affecting non-immigrant students.
Professional experience in international education, intercultural relations, student advising, counseling, overseas development work, or related fields.
Experience living abroad, working with international students, or cross-cultural exchange.
Second language ability.
Involvement with populations whose first language is not English.
Familiarity with Banner, ARGOS, ServiceNow, and/or other USU systems.
Familiarity with Terra Dotta.
Experience with SEVIS Real-Time Interactive (RTI).
Broad knowledge of USU policies and procedures.
