The College of Arts & Letters at Michigan State University is seeking an Academic Advisor. This is a fixed-term, twelve-month, academic specialist position with a 100% appointment in the College beginning late spring and is renewable contingent upon funding and performance.
Job Description Information
service as an academic advisor for students majoring in languages, literatures, and linguistics, including academic program planning, experiential education (education abroad/away, internships, undergraduate research, career planning), and student involvement on campus
facilitate department course approval process for education abroad students within and outside the department; work actively with the Office of Education Abroad, College of Arts & Letters Director of Excel Network, and department faculty as it relates to education abroad coursework, including selection, approval, and documentation
participation in the development and implementation of activities/projects related to student success;
participation in all New Student Orientation Programs, commencement, colloquium, recruitment, and associated events;
familiarity with enrollment and curricular systems, including Campus Solutions and ESAF;
regular engagement with faculty and academic staff in the designated departments & programs, the College of Arts & Letters Dean’s Office, the Honors College, and other units on campus;
representation of the relevant departments and programs at various undergraduate recruiting events including coordination of visits of prospective students;
participation in college-wide advisor meetings and professional development activities

Minimum Master’s degree in student affairs or related field.
Excellent written, oral, and dynamic presentation/communication skills are essential.
Energetic personality and strong work ethic are necessary.
Strong organizational skills with an emphasis on long term planning and implementation are vital to the success of the applicant.
Demonstrated ability to work closely with Academic Advisors and a diverse student population, faculty, and potential employers.
Demonstrated skill in managing diverse and nuanced projects/programs.
Technical skills in word-processing, database management, PowerPoint, spreadsheets, and related.
A PhD in student affairs, higher education or related field.
Well prepared candidates will have at least three years of full-time work in advising or student affairs.
In addition, candidates may have professional or personal experience in education abroad as well as proficiency in or previous experience with studying a second language.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in working with first generation students.
