The International Student and Scholar Advisor is part of the Office of International Student and Scholar Services in the University Enrollment Affairs division at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for providing advice and support to students, scholars, and dependents on matters concerning F and J status, cultural adjustment, and personal and related issues. This position is expected to maintain an up-to-date working knowledge of the relevant federal regulations and policy guidance needed to support work with Vanderbilt students, scholars, and academic departments. Reporting directly to the Director, the International Student and Scholar Advisor collaborates frequently with campus partners across the university.
The International Student and Scholar Advisor will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the university’s F-1 student program and J-1 Exchange Visitor program. This position advises international students and scholars and academic departments on immigration matters related to F and J statuses, prepares immigration documents, and works with students and scholars on various personal, academic, and financial issues. This position will assist ISSS leadership with the development of resources to improve services for third-party sponsored students and scholars, along with a focus on enhancing information for departments and faculty who host them.
Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the university’s F-1 student program and J-1 Exchange Visitor program.
Advise international students and scholars and academic departments on immigration matters related to F and J statuses.
Prepare immigration documents for international students, scholars and their dependents.
Work with students and scholars on various personal, academic and financial issues.
Assist in development, coordination and delivery of ISSS programs, workshops and presentations.
Assist in development of resources pertaining to inviting, hosting, and providing support for third-party sponsored students and scholars.
Assist with special projects, student outreach efforts and the support of student organizations as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree is necessary.
Master’s degree in higher education, international studies, intercultural communication, counseling, or a related field is preferred.
Two years of experience as a DSO and ARO working with international students, scholars, and dependents in a higher education environment is necessary.
Three to five years of prior experience as a DSO and ARO is preferred.
Experience working with sponsored students and/or visiting scholars is preferred.
Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Knowledge of F-1 and J-1 regulations, and experience with SEVIS and SEVIS batch processing is strongly preferred.
U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required to access SEVIS.
