The Office of the Vice Provost of International Affairs (OVPIA) (https://global.cornell.edu) under the framework of "Global Cornell" is comprised of internationally engaged units which foster high-impact international research and collaborations, teach and mentor the next generation of global citizens, and support international experiences and cultural exchange for all Cornellians. Our units include Global Hubs, Global Learning (Education Abroad & International Services), Global Operations, Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies, and Migrations: A Global Grand Challenge. Together, we make a world of difference.
About the role
Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice Provost/Executive Director of Global Operations in the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs (OVPIA), the Associate Director, International Health, Safety, and Security (AD-IHSS) applies an institution-wide approach to support international travel by Cornell's Ithaca and NYC Tech campuses.
This position serves as the point of contact within Cornell for health, safety and security preparedness protocols and services associated with international travel. The AD-IHSS manages the Cornell International Travel Registry and travel petition process, stewards compliance of Policy 8.5, and maintains a travel warning and restricted destination list. They facilitate education and training of travelers and program leaders; prepares campus partners for site visits; consults on safety plan development and related inquiries; assists in policy development and protocols; and creates/maintains a variety of travel resources for the campus community. They also support the International Travel Advisory and Response Team (ITART) by researching and monitoring world affairs; evaluating special travel requests; providing information and analysis; and assisting in implementing decisions made by ITART and university leadership. The AD-IHSS manages the day-to-day relationship with our international health and security risk management vendor and is the primary responder 24/7 for international crisis and/or consultations.
The ideal candidate will be a leader with vision and come with deep professional experience in international health, safety, and security, likely from holding a similar role in a complex, research driven higher education institution or other international organization. They will have a passion for the field and supporting student, staff, and faculty international travel, whether helping travelers identify and understand the general and context-specific risks of traveling abroad, communicating resources available to them, and ensuring that travelers are thoughtfully supported in the event of an emergency or incident while abroad. They will have experience in strategically identifying opportunities to meet evolving needs, preparing carefully crafted proposals, working collaboratively with stakeholders to present ideas, and taking approved projects to the finish line. They will also be able to quickly get up to speed on the university's risk tolerance level to align their work approach accordingly.
There's never a dull moment for this role as it is dynamic and filled with meaningful challenges that combine strategic thinking, problem solving, and creativity with action. Lateral influence and strong organizational and communication skills are needed to collaborate across the institution, champion existing and emerging policy and compliance needs, enhance programs, build efficiencies, and identify new opportunities to support Cornell's international travelers. Managing systems, data, KPIs, tracking impact and compliance, and leveraging innovative technology to efficiently scale operations is required.
The AD-IHSS is a member of Global Operations--an innovative team which, together, drives thoughtful, strategic change and looks for ways to improve upon its collective work and the support provided the Cornell community. Adaptability and a true openness to change is critical. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, new Federal research security guidelines for travel, export control compliance, and other changes on the horizon, this role will continue to evolve with institutional priorities.
