Suffolk University is pleased to announce a career opportunity as an International Student Advisor! This position will provide comprehensive support to Suffolk's international student population by offering immigration advising and cultural adjustment support to ensure students' success at Suffolk. As part of the Center for International Education & Study Away (CIESA) and Division of Student Success (DSS), this position will be instrumental in providing education around visa compliance, as well as social and educational programming to engage international students with the wider Suffolk community.

Responsibility

Serve as the Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) to the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State.

Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and guidelines pertaining to international students, scholars and their families.

Process immigration documents and determine eligibility for immigration benefits including issuance of initial I-20 or DS-2019, employment, and transfer.

Provide individual guidance to international students. Advising session topics can include cultural adjustment, as well as issues regarding academic, social, health and safety concerns. Refer students in need to appropriate resources (DSS academic support services, Counseling Health & Wellness, Dean of Students, and other university partners). Participate, as needed, in the Suffolk Cares Committee to work with stakeholders on student-related issues and concerns.

Disseminate pertinent information to groups of international students via presentations/workshops.

Develop social media and web-based strategies to better communicate policies and procedures to international students.

Organize engagement activities and programs to support international students in relation to cultural, social, and academic adjustment.

Recruit international students through our university exchange partner network. Organize events geared toward welcoming and assisting exchange students in learning about and adjusting to life in Boston and at Suffolk.

Work with other University offices to advocate for international students.

Participate as an active team member in other CIESA service areas and across DSS; possible participation in university-wide committees.

Requirements/Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree required. Masters, preferred.
• 1-3 years of experience working with international students in a higher education setting.
• Understanding of challenges faced by international students in US higher education.
• Knowledge of SEVIS, immigration law, policies and procedures, preferred.
• Familiarity with cultures and a broad international outlook.
• Experience living abroad and fluency in a foreign language, preferred.
• Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
• Must be a US Citizen or Permanent resident in order to serve as both a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Proven ability to be an effective team member, as well as the ability to work independently.
• Demonstrated experience working in a high volume, deadline-oriented, customer-focused environment.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and handle difficult situations.
• Strong computer and analytical skills.
• Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
