Purdue University seeks an experienced J-1 counselor to contribute to our J-1 Exchange Program. Depending on experience, this individual may lead, participate in, or support the following: processing of J-1 Scholar requests for our main campus; special projects, programs or services aimed at improving the experience of J-1 scholars or their families while at Purdue; and the utilization or improvement of our J-1 technology and systems. Our preferred candidate will come to us with a clear understanding of the optimal balance between J-1 compliance and proactive, meaningful scholar support. We are especially interested in candidates with interest in ‘vulnerable scholar’ programs or support.

Required:

• U.S. Citizenship or U.S. permanent resident 
• Bachelor's Degree in law/legal studies, engineering, technology, international education, international business, education administration, immigration, intercultural communication, counseling, or related/relevant field
• Four (4) years of experience which must include one or more of the following:
  • Operation and manipulation of a customizable web-based software system;
  • Interpretation and application of rules or regulations, such as to evaluate eligibility for regulated benefits or other applications, ensure quality control, etc.
  • Coordination, participation, or leadership of immigration, international, intercultural, or study abroad projects, programs, or similar events or efforts
  • Advising, guidance, or other counseling activities involving complex issues, strategy, and/or competing priorities (such as but not limited to immigration, international, intercultural, or study abroad issues)
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with students, scholars, faculty, staff, alumni, and others who represent a broad range of cultural backgrounds and perspectives 
• Demonstrated experience in prioritizing work in a fast-paced environment, achieving assigned goals under pressure, and appropriately handling confidential material
• Excellent verbal and written communication, organization, and data entry skills 
• SEVIS familiarity 

Preferred:

• Advanced degree in relevant field
• Experience using Sunapsis or other immigration data system
• Experience as an Alternate/Responsible Officer for a J-1 program
• Knowledge and understanding of U.S. immigration laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, including but not limited to J-1 Scholar laws, regulations, and policies
• One (1) year working with international faculty, staff, or scholars in a customer service role within a higher education environment
• Training and/or certification in intercultural communication, diversity, and inclusion, or related area
• One (1) year of Purdue University experience
