The Cognitive Science Program within Interdisciplinary Social Sciences at Berkeley offers undergraduates the opportunity to explore the mind in interdisciplinary perspective. Courses in the program draw on psychology, linguistics, computer science, philosophy, neuroscience, and anthropology, among other fields, to illuminate how the human mind works, and why it works the way it does. The program draws on over forty affiliated faculty from a variety of departments, and is closely integrated with cognitive science research efforts across the campus.
The role of the Student Services Advisor is to provide academic advice to the undergraduates as well as coherence, stability and consistency to the major program. The advisor must address the challenges inherent in interdisciplinary and interdepartmental majors, and develop solutions to these problems. The advisor must have a broad and detailed knowledge of the academic units and undergraduate curriculum across the campus and a specialized understanding of the nature of interdisciplinary inquiry. The advisor works as part of a Student Services team, and in addition to academic advising, also provides career and industry advice and acts as a liaison between industry and alumnae and current Cognitive Science students. General guidance for this position comes from the faculty director and the director of administration.
Applying professional Student Services concepts, provides the full range of student services to student population served by the organization.
Advises faculty on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures.
Reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion.
Identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions.
Keeps abreast of relevant course offerings across the College and campus and maintains connections with student service staff across the campus.
Provides informed guidance regarding career preparation and searches.
Provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for an interdisciplinary program.
Advises students on declaration process.
Manages student entrance evaluation, including evaluation of prerequisites and grade point averages (GPA).
Assist students in the development of a program concentration, taking into account individual goals.
Advises students on a wide range of course possibilities and/or ways to complete degree requirements that may not be clearly defined.
Evaluates and advises students in petitions for exceptions to departmental /college requirements.
Advises on special eligibility requirements such as Honors programs/fellowships/scholarships/competitive internships.
Confirms that students have met requirements for degree completion and honors designation when there are no clear precedents or articulations, such as interdisciplinary programs, coursework outside the major, or when transfer work is involved.
Processes major applications, manages student list serve (Piazza).
Coordinates faculty office hours
Creates and keeps current calendar of upcoming events, deadlines, etc.
Monitors and manages program social media accounts - strategizes regarding social media/outreach strategies.
Maintain thorough knowledge of University and College policies; advise faculty and students on registration and enrollment procedures; assist students in taking full advantage of the numerous campus programs for education abroad, internships, research, scholarships and graduate school preparation.
Develops and maintains all written documents and forms for majors including student handbooks, application materials, advising materials, departmental forms, general catalog information and web site content.
Creates, maintains, closes and archives student files according to unit schedules, written job standards and the Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Keeps track of all student contacts with file notes, maintains up-to-date student progress worksheets, processes petitions, and calculates GPAs.
Maintains APR and BOA records.
Identifies students with GPA or progress problems, advises students, and recommends appropriate courses of action by the department/school/college (e.g., academic probation, dismissal).
Determines barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and makes appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units.
Collaborates with interdisciplinary program director(s) and/or faculty committee(s) which oversee program direction and approves policy/administrative changes.
Advises new and continuing instructors on student advising issues and on departmental/ school/college and university policies and procedures.
Maintain communication with partner departments to assess curriculum needs and course offerings.
Communicate with scheduling administrators, faculty, and student services staff regarding upcoming course offerings across affiliated departments and programs.
Advise faculty director(s) on the formulation of department policy by identifying areas needing clarification and proposing solutions.
Analyze the consequences of program academic policies and recommend new or changed policies.
The Student Services Advisor should be the historian and resource for all decisions concerning major requirements, exceptions, and practices relevant to the major programs.
Review program curriculum and make recommendations for changes to better accommodate student demand and areas of focus.
Research and maintain up-to-date information regarding industries relevant to the Cognitive Science major, and make such information available to students in helpful forms.
Plan, organize, and conduct information sessions and other events to foster connection between industry, alumnae, and students.
Partner with appropriate campus offices to enable effective fundraising.
Supervise work-study student(s) to assist in these tasks.
Experience advising students in interdisciplinary academic programs.
Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of or ability to learn University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of or ability to learn University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Thorough knowledge of college/school policies, procedures, and requirements.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
Ability in problem identification, reasoning.
Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
Ability to multi-task and maintain multiple projects through conception, development, and execution.
Ability to take ideas and develop those ideas into an action plan including timeline, resource need, outcome, and evaluation.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills.
Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Masters degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training preferred.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
